Over the past seven years with having children, I’ve come to find a few things that have worked really well for our playroom (and haven’t worked so well!). We don’t have any battery operated toys at home (excluding a CD player) and I’ve really enjoyed finding alternatives that spark creativity & engagement. I’ve also been a big fan of toy rotation, having a majority of toys out of sight and rotating them out when interest seems to fade. It’s been most helpful to find the right storage solution that houses toys and crafts for kids of various ages that is accessible but can be tucked away safely and easily. Here’s some of our favorite toy storage solutions. I’ll be sharing our favorite toys in another post!
The PAX Wardrobes are the real MVPs in our playroom (below). I have the PAX FARDAL glossy doors in white for a polished look that’s easy to keep clean. We have three different wardrobes, one Cabinet that is 39 3/8″wide x 92 7/8″ tall and two cabinets that are 19 5/8″ wide x 92 7/8″tall. I like having the different sizes to add a some flexibility for our storage. The wider cabinet is great for holding a variety of storage boxes and the narrow cabinets are great for storing smaller art supplies in drawers. I’ve included a variety of interior organizers such as shelves, drawers and pull out trays. I love these for corralling like things together.
I also love the IKEA EKET system (below) for the toys I leave out every day. It’s functional, minimalist, and holds up to everyday use. I’ve secured the shelves to the wall for safety. We keep little knick knacks on top and have a variety of multi-use toys that are appropriate for every age. I have exposed baskets on the bottom from Crate & Barrel but they are sadly no longer available. I’ve linked a few other similar baskets at the bottom of this post (I love these and these!). In the past I would use enclosed baskets but I found it hard to keep track of what was inside and these are a bit more approachable for the kids.
I have an IKEA FILSAT table that can be multi-functional as a home school desk or rice/water table when you remove the top. I also love the Pottery Barn tables that grow with your children. We’ve had one since our oldest was a baby. This rolling cart has been great for keeping our seven-year-olds home school materials close by. I love this multi compartment organizer for all of her pens & markers.
My favorite storage containers (clear containers stacked below right) are great for keeping all of the rotating toys organized. I no longer keep the original boxes as its harder to see the contents and I love how all the containers can stack with ease. These white containers are great for storing crafts as are these lidded acrylic canisters. These small containers (here and here) are ideal for corralling small toys and figurines and are perfect for travel or restaurant busy bags. I’ve always loved the idea of these craft jars but have yet to try them myself. A sleeper favorite is certainly this washi tape organizer.
