There is nothing I love more than decorating for the holidays! My kids and I look forward to unwrapping our colorful collection of nutcrackers every year! These nutcrackers always stop everyone in their tracks but you will be surprised how easy they are to make.
With just a handful of paintbrushes and a bit of paint, you can create a colorful collection of Christmas nutcrackers. What I also love about these is if the rainbow isn’t your thing you can pick a colorway of your choice – I am looking at doing an all-green version for this year!
Another favorite tradition to do is read The Nutcracker (this is my kid’s favorite as it plays the music while you read) and decorate gingerbread (you can read how to how the best gingerbread party here) as well as decorate sugar cookies (here is our go-to recipe)

How to Paint Nutcrackers
What you need:
- Wooden nutcrackers or figurines (10-15 is ideal – of various sizes)
- Butcher paper to cover the table
- Acrylic paint – I love these
- Sponge paint brushes – these are great – you will need at least two per Nutcracker
- (Optional) lacquer spray to make them glossy
What to do:
- pick out your colors – don’t be afraid to mix colors together to get the perfect shade, this is what i did.
- cover your table (you will thank me later)
- use sponge paintbrushes to coat the nutcracker fully
- let dry and apply a second coat if necessary
- spray with lacquer (optional)
- display and enjoy
If painting is a bit too messy – download a color-your-own nutcracker coloring page!!

These look amazing and would love to do these for my playroom. Do you remember the heights of your tallest nutcrackers or any of the height of the ones you have.

Hi! I’d say the highest is 14′ – 16″. So fun for a playroom!
