You know nothing brings me more joy than a chic tablescape – especially one with fun and colorful candles. I love the look of the spiral twisted tapers in my vintage candlestick holders and decided to try and create the same look at home. These Twisted Tapers are quite simple! All you need is a few items that you already probably have on hand at home!
I love that you can do this hack with a variety of candles but just make sure they are solid colored tapers (these are the ones I used) otherwise the color will come off when soaked in the hot water. I did red and pink candles for a festive Galentines Day party! Keep the candles in the hot water while working with them. After you realize how easy these Twisted Tapers are to make you will be the envy of every dinner party – set with hostess gifts for months! Make sure to take a peek at my Valentine’s Day Edit for festive gifts for all your loved ones!
Supplies Needed to make DIY Twisted Spiral Taper Candle
- Taper candles
- Large glass container
- Candy thermometer
- Hot water
- Waxed paper or zip lock – if you roll on a marble countertop with a marble rolling pin you don’t need this!
- Rolling pin or smaller glass jar
Step-by-Step Directions
Step 1: Prep Candles
Fill a glass container (like this one) with hot water that is around 110 – 120°F. Use a candy thermometer to read the temperature. Place taper candles in the water and let sit for around 10 min until soft and pliable.
Step 2: Flatten
Pull one taper out of the warm water – keeping the remaining candles in the hot water while working with them. Place in either a zip lock bag or between parchment paper so it doesn’t stick. Using a rolling pin or glass jar, roll out the middle of the taper till it is about 1/2 in thick, leaving 2″ at the top and bottom unrolled.
I was able to use my marble rolling pin and marble cutting board without it sticking!
Step 3: The Twist
Using your fingers grab the candle at each end and twist. If the candle starts to harden you can stick it back in the warm water. I found the shorter candles were a little easier to twist than the tall ones, but both came out fun!
Once you reach your desired look place the twisted tapers in cold water to harden.
Step 4: Light and Enjoy!
