There’s something about a thoughtfully set table that just sets the tone. It doesn’t have to be fancy or over the top—some of my favorite tables have been the most relaxed. A little linen, a few layers, and a handful of flowers can make even a simple dinner feel like a celebration.
Whether you’re hosting overnight guests for a weekend lunch or just want to make a Wednesday dinner feel special, here are my favorite tips for creating a table that’s equal parts effortless and beautiful.

1. Start with layers.
A linen tablecloth or runner is an easy way to anchor your space and instantly makes things feel pulled together. Don’t worry if it’s wrinkled—imperfect is perfect here.
2. Mix your textures.
I love combining old with new: a woven charger under a white plate, vintage inspired glassware next to simple flatware. The contrast makes everything feel relaxed but intentional.
3. Napkins go a long way.
Cloth napkins instantly elevate the table and are easy to reuse. I usually fold them simply or tie them in a loose knot and tuck in a sprig of something green—rosemary, thyme, or whatever’s growing nearby.
4. Keep the centerpiece low and loose.
No towering arrangements here! A small pitcher (or here) of grocery store flowers (arranged loosely, of course) or a cluster of bud vases down the center keeps things casual and lets everyone see across the table.
5. Add a little candlelight.
A few taper or votive candles (I always stick with unscented) scattered down the middle are all you need. I light them even when we’re just having takeout—because why not?
6. Don’t overthink it.
The goal isn’t perfection—it’s atmosphere. I’ve set plenty of tables with just the basics and a big smile. People remember the way a dinner made them feel more than the salad fork placement.
