When in the heart of Provence, France these three nearby villages are a great introduction to the geography and charm of the region. These hilltop towns in the Luberon Valley feel like they are lost in time. They are filled with stone buildings, terra-cotta tiled roofs, patina shutters, and winding cobblestone streets.

We visited Bonnieux on market day to stock up on provisions for the next few days. The market vendors offer everything from linens to shoes, homewares, soaps from nearby Marseilles, and of course locally grown fruits, vegetables, meats & cheese. If time permits, make a reservation for lunch or dinner at the nearby property Capelongue. You can dine at either their Michelin-starred La Bastide restaurant or Cafe Capelongue.

Not far from Bonnieux is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful villages in France, Ménerbes. This village in the Luberon Valley was mainly built in the 16th and 17th centuries. It holds a rich history and is home to The Citadel & the Saint-Blaise Chapel. You can park in the lower car park and walk up through the village. Enjoy a wine tasting (and gelato for the kids) at The Maison de la Truffe et du Vin. It’s a 17th-century mansion with sweeping views in a charming lavender-filled garden.
Near both Ménerbes & Bonnieux is Lacoste. From a distance, it looks like a mountain village out of a fairytale and as you approach, it is just that. Frozen in time, you are swept away by the beauty and quiet of the village. It is sprinkled with art galleries and a few cafes.
