Growing up in Maine, many winter weekends were spent skiing at New England mountains. I have such vivid memories of racing my dad down the slopes and warming up afterward with a cup of hot chocolate. There’s something incredibly special about that kind of family time on a ski trip, and it’s an experience I can’t wait to recreate with my own family one day.
Preparing for a ski trip can feel a bit like bracing for a storm. Just as you’d plan ahead for unpredictable weather, having the right clothing and gear is essential before heading to the mountain. From warm, insulated layers and waterproof outerwear to must-haves like helmets, goggles, and gloves, being well prepared truly makes all the difference in how much you enjoy your time on the slopes.
Mountain days can be cold, so layering is key. I usually start with a good base layer, add a fleece, and on especially cold days, a vest as well. I almost never ski without a neck gaiter—and if you’re skiing with kids, I highly recommend packing an extra one so they can swap it out midday. A few other essentials worth noting: hand warmers are always a good idea, and a solid chapstick is a non-negotiable.
Whether you’re a seasoned skier, heading out for your very first run, or simply there for the après-ski fun, this packing guide will help ensure your time on the mountain—yours and your little ones’—is warm, comfortable, and truly memorable.
