Every year I tell myself I’m going to hold it together.
And every year, without fail, I’m the mom picking my kids up from the gate with sunglasses on — not because it’s sunny — but because watching them walk out those doors for the last time until fall completely wrecks me. The last day of school feels like a stamp in time. Another grade. Another year. Another inch or two I didn’t see coming.
Four kids later and I still haven’t figured out how to brace for it. You’d think I’d be used to it by now. But every June, that final bell rings and I feel it all at once — the pride, the bittersweetness, the quiet disbelief that we’re already here again.
Summer is still magic. That slow, analog, go-outside-and-don’t-come-back-until-the-streetlights-are-on kind of magic.
So instead of bracing, I lean in. We have a little tradition in our house — the summer kickoff basket. It’s waiting on the kitchen table when they walk through the door: water balloons, sidewalk chalk, a stack of books, something sweet, and fresh pajamas for the first official night of summer. No screens, no agenda. Just the kind of afternoon that feels straight out of 1994.
It’s my reminder — and theirs — that summer is still magic. That slow, analog, go-outside-and-don’t-come-back-until-the-streetlights-are-on kind of magic. The kind of summer I grew up with, and the kind I want them to look back on someday.
I’ve been putting together our basket for a few weeks now, sourcing all the pieces that feel nostalgic, intentional, and genuinely fun — no subscription boxes, no screens, just the good stuff. Below is everything going into ours this year.
